Is your passion art and beauty? Cosmetology is the professional skill that turns your passion for art and beauty into a lucrative career! What is cosmetology? It is the professional skill of beautifying the hair, skin, and nails.  A licensed cosmetologist’s career can take many paths, including hairstylist, color specialist, esthetician, nail technician, lash and brow artist, and even become an instructor. Want to be a part of this lucrative, exciting industry?

To become a licensed cosmetologist in Oregon you need to complete the required number of hours of classroom theory and hands-on hours, then take the Practical and Written exams, for more information on scheduling your exam click here .

Requirements For an Oregon Cosmetology License

To obtain an Oregon license in any of the following areas, Full Cosmetology, Hair Design, Esthetics, or Nail Technician, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Graduate from a school that is licensed by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission – Click here for a list of Licensed Cosmetology Schools
  • Complete the required  hours and services
  • Pass the State Approved Practical and Written Exams

Research Cosmetology Programs

When choosing your Cosmetology Program be sure that you are choosing a reputable, professional, Oregon state licensed school. Talk with people working in the field, ask them where they got trained and if they would recommend a school. Make sure to visit a few schools in the area, if possible. Check out the differences. How does it feel at the school? Do the students and educators appear happy, professional, and knowledgeable? Determine the cost of the program, the tuition, kits and fees. Does the school offer financial aid? Make sure you understand all the costs and everything on the contract before you sign it. This helps to give you a good picture as to what you are looking for.
